Bagpipes / highland / uilleann pipes multi-mic phase: chanter vs drones, room, and outdoor PA fold

Close mics on highland bagpipes, uilleann pipes, or smallpipe sets feel huge and present in the booth and on parade wedges. On outdoor PA fold, livestream, or phone playback, chanter attack, drone body, and Mid often thin or cancel against drone mics, room, and PA paths that carry the same pressure a few milliseconds later. That is usually polarity and arrival time between chanter and secondary paths, plus a stereo bed that was never folded before send. Fix polarity and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds before mono fold. Distinct from full marching-band outdoor checklists and accordion/bandoneon bellows stacks: this page is about pipes (chanter + drones) alone. Cross-links: marching band, accordion, woodwind, live FOH.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for mic placement or mono audition of the stream or mix bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What bagpipes / pipes phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the stream / mix / outdoor PA bus (not only wedges). Flip a utility to mono.
  2. A/B chanter muted vs open under drones, room, and PA return. Note what disappears: drone body, Mid, attack, sustain.
  3. Solo pairs: chanter vs drones, close vs room, stereo bed vs mono fold.
  4. Check correlation on the delivery bus, then with the pipes muted vs full.

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between chanter and drones / room / PA

Flip chanter vs drones, or close vs room, when body or Mid return immediately on a clear phrase. Guide: polarity vs phase. Cousins: woodwind section, accordion, marching band outdoor.

2. Small delay align secondary paths to the hero chanter image

Drone mics, room, and PA returns often arrive later (or earlier after digital hops) than the chanter close. A few samples of delay on the secondary often restores body better than EQ for "more drone."

3. One hero pipes image to the stream or outdoor PA bus

Do not send chanter, drones, room, and PA all hot into the livestream or outdoor fold. Pick a hero Mid-safe close (often chanter or a focused chanter+drone blend), keep extras muted or low. Parallel stacks are classic thin-pipes on phone fold. Related: overhead & room.

4. Prefer hero chanter as the melody; quieter color drones or room

Secondary closes should color drone pressure and space, not replace the hero image for the stream or PA mix. If every close sits at full level under a loud OH, mono fold almost always hollows the chanter.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on pipes beds before fold

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make booth headphones huge and phones hollow. Keep critical low-mid and drone body centered for outdoor PA and print.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Studio / outdoor / livestream checklist (to send)

1. Label chanter vs drones vs room vs PA

Name chanter, drones, room, and PA returns so operators know what hits the livestream or outdoor fold. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check delivery bus alone, then with full pipes

Solo drone body and Mid in mono. Then open chanter attack and sustain in mono. Note fights between secondary color and hero chanter.

3. Watch outdoor PA, phone, and archival destinations

Most remote and phone viewers hear mono or near-mono. Guides: marching band / outdoor parade, live FOH, OBS livestream.

4. Re-check after wind, stand moves, or set changes

Outdoor wind and mic angle change distance and bleed. Flip polarity again after you move the stand, change chanter aim, or switch highland vs uilleann setup.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo delivery / PA bus in mono → polarity chanter vs drones/room → delay-align secondary → one hero image → quieter extras under hero → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with full pipes → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a stereo bed → fold again for parade / stream / studio print.
